Research in Instrumentation and Measurement

Instrumentation and Measurement has been an active research topic at DEI for over thirty years.

During this time we kept at the forefront of measurement and instrumentation evolution, recording and contributing to the advent of entirely new fields of activity.

We rely on a solid background in digital signal processing and statistical analysis, that are essential tools in the design of modern instruments and measurement algorithms.

Some of the fields where we have been applying our skills are noted in the following.

Research

Our current interests are presented in the page on research.

We are always open to new research problems where our skills can be applied and improved.

Topics we have been working on over the years, that contribute to our collective body of knowledge, are:

Measurement system architectures: Distributed measurement systems, networked instrumentation, real-time networks.

Synchronization: clock modelling, simulators development, uncertainty evaluation

Wireless Systems: Measurement methods for the evaluation of the reliability and robustness of any wireless network and protocol, espacially in the ISM and UHF RFID bands.

Electromagnetic compatibility: Measurement methods for EMC testing, environmental EMC monitoring, design criteria for EMC compliance.

Measurement for telecommunications: Analysis and monitoring of network traffic, measurement of mobile communications systems.
